Luke Sugie - Student Affairs Service Award 2007-08
Statement of Wonderfulness
In Celebration of
In the absence of a full-time director, the Diversity Development Office has been run by Luke Sugie, a graduate student, who aptly serves as its coordinator. The person did not only plainly match the position and needs, but rather, such arrangement resulted in a perfect match.
Luke has been at OSU for 7 years as an engineering undergraduate and as a master’s degree candidate in Applied Ethics. He was a coordinator in the early days of the Pride Center and has taken the lead on many LGBT initiatives, including moving the Pride Center out of the Women’s Center and into its own space.
Luke’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, advising and support of the cultural centers, including hiring, training, supervision, mentoring, and support. In the absence of a director, Luke has been in charge of the department’s operation. As a seasoned student leader he was asked to take the lead on many aspects of the program where his performance has been rated as superior. He has been known for his active involvements and caring attitude especially towards student leaders, touching the lives of the students in the cultural centers as a mentor and leader who helps them serve their communities with pride and with competence.
Luke has been a strong supporter of student affairs projects during his undergraduate and graduate careers - as a Promise intern, Pride Center leader, Pride Week coordinator, and as an active member of the Bias Response Team as well as the Student Government. He was willing to serve as the primary professional leader when the unit was down a staff member. He cares deeply about the cultural centers and their successes. Open and caring, he always celebrates others’ successes.
Luke has learned so much about systems of oppression, power and privilege, and has worked tirelessly to create a sense of justice for students and others whose lives have been touched by discrimination and helplessness. He also can celebrate successes and enjoy the amazing things that students help to create. He has always been perceived as Thoughtful, Smart, Just, and Amazing. Luke has consistently helped move OSU forward.
One of Luke’s esteemed colleagues was so inspired as to compose the following verse entitled “Luke Sugie: A Celebration:”
A spirit, free as the wind, a light as bright as the North Star, a colleague, mentor, friend that lives that we all aspire to be—Just, Open, Celebrative
Master Luke entered the OSU community, 6 years ago, as an undergraduate student. A bud of a flower, soaking up the sunshine and withstanding, almost thriving, on the fertilizer. Growing in each season; starting as a Rainbow Continuum member, and then Co-president, Pride Center Director, Student Involvement Peer Leader, Barometer Columnist, Engineer, and, fortunately for all of us, a Student Affairs professional for Intra Cultural Student Services in Diversity Development. Luke, moving through our community always modeling integrity, intention, dignity and honor.
Luke - we celebrate your passion. We celebrate your genus. We celebrate your Marge Simpson Wig. We celebrate your humanity for your self and for us all.
The fragrance of the flower you have become will linger long in the hearts, souls of your students, colleagues and the stage of the Memorial Union Ballroom!
